THE W G GRACE ROOKIE CARD! The very earliest card of W.G. Grace, from a source which dated itself "1884", a Victorian scrapbook (see supporting photo).
The card is priced at £100,000 - or best offer.
Only 2 of this card are known and this is the best of the 2! The other Grace cards sold in the £1,000s but they were not THE rookie, This is THE Grace rookie!
W. G. Grace for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, from Baines' earliest collection of "Cricket & Word Competition Cards", issued in blind, sealed packets circa 1882-4. The back of the card shows the coat of arms which Baines applied to only the earliest of his cards. After the initial series it was not used again, maybe because the firm did not have permission to use the municipal Bradford coat of arms on its wares.
Note: the later Union Jack W G Grace card was issued without the coat of arms back, c.1884-85.
John Baines was one of two sons of "Edward Baines & Sons", a firm of printers from Leeds. John followed his father in the printing business by opening his own firm, transferring the Baines marque to Manningham near Bradford around 1880.
