Description
From the end of the 1880's, by Baines' competitor WN Sharpe, probably the earliest Sunderland AFC card. Yes, this is soccer. The red/white stripes emblem confirms it, and two soccer balls are seen. The shout, 'Line Up" was a generic sporting term, which was used in both football codes, though only rugby still uses it. Line up: get ready, i.e. stand up and be counted! The plain back says little but this is a WN Sharpe die-cut type, not used by other manufacturers. Similar size, shape and ... scent to other Sharpe cards from 1880s! SOLD AS SEEN
